Finnkino Oy operates the largest chain of cinemas in Finland. The company was founded in September 1986 as a consortium of a total of 34 companies engaged in film distribution and exhibition. Finnkino has been a part of the Rautakirja Group since 1994.
Finnkino currently operates 15 cinemas in eleven cities in Finland - Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Kuopio, Lahti, Pori, Rovaniemi,Espoo and Vantaa. The 15 cinemas have a total of 89 screens. Alongside its operations in the domestic market, Finnkino has subsidiaries in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Finnkino is continuously developing its cinema services, both by building new theatres and refurbishing existing ones. Finnkino’s aim is to develop and expand the cinema-going experience by offering a combination of quality films, the very best in comfort and audio-visual technology, and a wide range of ancillary services.
Finnkino Oy is also involved in film distribution activities. This aspect of the company’s operations is geared primarily towards domestic Finnish releases and the import of art-house movies to complement the standard repertoire. In addition to actual movie theatre operations, Finnkino also imports films for video sales and rentals.
Rautakirja Movie Operations recorded net sales of EUR 88.0 million in 2009. Movie Theatre Operations employed an average of 982 persons over the year, with the great majority of these working in the chain of cinemas. Future prospects Finnkino is currently engaged in a vigorous construction programme involving multiscreen cinemas and cinema complexes. The new venues will offer a variety of ancillary services, expanding the cinema from its traditional narrower role towards modern entertainment and leisure-time centres. The upgrading of the chain’s cinemas and a strong revival of interest in domestic films provide excellent conditions for the current growth in the number of Finnish cinema-goers to continue in the years to come. www.finnkino.fi (In Finnish)
